San Juan Cruise Port Guide: What to Do, Walk, and See (No Excursion Needed)

When we first saw San Juan on our cruise itinerary, we’ll be honest…we were not excited.
We figured we’d get off the ship, walk around the port for a bit, and head back onboard. A quick short visit, right?
But we were completely wrong.
San Juan ended up being our favorite port of the entire trip, and quite honestly, one we can’t wait to visit again.
First Impressions of San Juan
Right off the ship, we were surprised by how:
- Clean the area was
- Safe we felt walking around
- Beautiful the streets and buildings were
Street vendors lined the sidewalks near the port, selling handmade goods and local souvenirs.
Prices were very reasonable, and the vendors were incredibly friendly. Not pushy at all.
What We Did in San Juan (No Excursion Needed)
We kept it simple, and it turned out to be perfect.
Step 1: Explore the Port Area
We started by walking through the vendor area right near the cruise port.
- Handmade souvenirs
- Local crafts
- A great way to soak in the culture right away
Step 2: Walk to the Fort
From there, we made our way to Castillo San Cristóbal.
And this is where the day really surprised us.
Visiting Castillo San Cristóbal
This is a National Historic Site, and it’s absolutely worth the visit.
Cost:
- $10 per adult
- Kids = FREE
For everything you get, this is an incredible value.

What We Loved:
- Stunning views of the ocean
- Tons of space to walk and explore
- A mix of history and hands-on discovery

We spent close to two hours here, just taking it all in.
Even if you’re not a big “history person,” this is something special.
Shopping & Local Streets
After the fort, we walked through side streets and stopped in different shops along the way.
This was one of our favorite parts of the day.
- Beautiful streets and architecture
- Unique local stores
- Relaxed, welcoming atmosphere

And again, we felt safe the entire time.
What Our Kids Thought
Our kids really enjoyed this stop—which honestly surprised us a bit.
They loved:
- Exploring the fort
- Walking the streets
- Picking out souvenirs
It was the perfect mix of learning, exploring, and fun.
Why San Juan Became Our Favorite Port
This stop completely exceeded our expectations.
We thought:
Quick stop → back on the ship
Instead:
We stayed off the ship the entire time we were docked.
What made it stand out:
- Walkable from the port
- Safe and easy to explore
- Friendly (not pushy) vendors
- Affordable attractions
- Beautiful scenery everywhere

Tips for Visiting San Juan on a Cruise
Skip the Excursions (Seriously)
You don’t need one.
Just get off the ship and explore on your own.

Walk to the Fort
Make this a priority, it’s worth it.
Take Your Time Exploring
Don’t rush back to the ship. Wander the streets and enjoy it.
One Thing We’d Do Differently
Next time, we’re definitely trying the local food trucks.
We didn’t do it this time and wish we had!
