Symphony of the Seas Packing List for Families (What We Actually Used)

Packing for a cruise always sounds easy, until you’re trying to prepare for pool days, port days, dinners, formal nights, kids, and everything in between.

After multiple family cruises, we’ve figured out what is actually worth packing, what we always use, and what families can skip.

This is our real family packing list for cruising with kids, and this packing list came in handy while packing for our cruise on Symphony of the Seas.

Cruise Essentials

These are the non-negotiables we always pack.

  • Passports and travel documents
  • Cruise documents
  • Wallet and ID
  • Phone chargers
  • Portable charger
  • Lanyards
  • Carry-on bag for embarkation day
  • Medications
  • Basic toiletries

The biggest one? Do not forget your travel documents.

If you forget something else, you can most likely find a place to buy it. If you forget your passport or cruise documents, good luck getting too far!

Cabin Must-Haves

Cruise cabins are functional, but small. A few simple items make a big difference.

We always pack:

  • Magnetic hooks
  • Notepad and pen
  • Extra charging cables
  • Small sound machine for nighttime sleeping

Magnetic hooks are one of the easiest cruise packing upgrades and help create extra hanging space in the room.

The notepad and pen are especially helpful when cruising with older kids. If we left the room early, we would leave a quick note so everyone knew where we were.

Pool and Beach Must-Haves

These are the things we always bring for sea days and beach stops.

  • Swimsuits
  • Cover-ups
  • Flip flops
  • Sunscreen (always pack more than you think!)
  • Sunglasses (plus an extra pair!)
  • Pool toys
  • Goggles
  • Collapsible sand buckets

Bring more sunscreen than you think you need. It is expensive onboard, and replacing it on the ship is not how you want to spend your vacation budget.

And always pack an extra pair of sunglasses. We’ve learned that one the hard way.

What We Pack for Kids

Cruising with kids is much easier when everyone has a few familiar comforts.

For our kids, we always pack:

  • Tablets (for travel days only)
  • Snacks
  • Homework if they are missing school
  • One stuffed animal or small comfort item
  • One toy for the cabin

You do not need to bring a lot for kids onboard. The ship does most of the entertaining.

A few comfort items and travel-day essentials go a long way.

What We’re Always Glad We Packed

A few things always end up being worth the extra space in the suitcase:

  • Extra sunscreen
  • Extra spending cash
  • Backup sunglasses
  • Pool toys for the kids

These are the small things that save money, avoid frustration, and make the trip easier.

What We Usually Overpack

Clothes. Every time!

We almost always overpack clothing, but we still do it anyway.

With kids, it is hard to know when someone will need an extra outfit, and we would rather overpack than pay for laundry services onboard.

Still, if there is one category most families can cut back on, it is clothing.

Biggest Packing Mistake to Avoid

Do not forget your travel documents.

This is the one mistake that can derail your trip before it even begins.

Passports, identification, and cruise documents should be the first thing packed and the first thing checked before leaving home.

Everything else can usually be replaced. Those cannot.

Final Thoughts: Symphony of the Seas Packing List for Families

Packing for Symphony of the Seas does not need to be complicated.

Most families do not need to overthink it. Pack smart, bring a few cruise-specific essentials, and focus on the things that make the trip easier.

The best packing list is not the longest one. It is the one that helps your vacation run smoothly.
