Puerto Plata Cruise Port Guide: Lazy River Tips, What to Do & Honest Review

Our first visit to Puerto Plata had us very excited.
We had seen photos and videos of the port, and it looked amazing, especially the pool and lazy river area.
Shopping, tropical vibes, and a relaxing day at the lazy river? We were all in.
But our day didn’t go exactly as planned…Check out our day in Puerto Plata and a full cruise port guide to this beautiful port.
First Impressions of Puerto Plata
Right when we got off the ship, we were welcomed by locals in costume near the Taino Bay sign. It was a fun way to start the day (and a great photo opportunity).
The port itself was:
- Clean
- Beautifully landscaped
- Full of shops and things to see
Overall, a really nice first impression.

Shopping & Exploring the Port
We took our time walking through the port area and checking out the shops.
- Plenty of souvenir options
- Some shops more expensive than others
- Friendly vendors
We also stopped for an iced latte at one of the cafés—and it was worth it.

The coffee in the Dominican Republic is excellent, and the barista was incredibly friendly. Definitely recommend making a stop.
Mojito Bar & Pool Area
On our way to the pool, we stopped to check out the Mojito Bar.
It looked great, but after seeing the prices, we decided to skip it and keep exploring.
The main pool area itself looked beautiful, with a fun, lively atmosphere.

The Lazy River (What You NEED to Know)
This was the part of the day we were most excited about.
But when we got there, here was a line of about 30–40 people waiting to get in.
And here’s the surprising part, we were the only ship in port that day.
After enjoying how uncrowded the ship had felt this entire trip, this caught us completely off guard.
What We Decided to Do Instead
After seeing the line, we made a last-minute decision, skip the pool and lazy river, and head back to the ship.
And honestly, we’re glad we did.
- The pool deck onboard was quiet
- Plenty of open chairs
- A much more relaxing experience
Our Kids’ Experience
Our kids were totally fine with the change of plans.
While we were excited for the lazy river, they were just as happy:
- Swimming on the ship
- Having more space
- Avoiding long lines

Our Honest Take on Puerto Plata
We really did enjoy our time at Puerto Plata.
Things we liked:
- Clean, well-designed port
- Beautiful tropical setting
- Good shopping options
- Friendly people
What Caught Us Off Guard:
- The lazy river line (even with one ship in port)
- Crowds concentrated in certain areas
What We’d Do Differently Next Time
If we visit again, and we would, we’ll change one thing:
Head straight to the lazy river first thing.
No stopping, no shopping, just go.
Excursions: Worth Considering?
There were several excursions available that looked like a lot of fun.
We didn’t book any this time due to our youngest child’s age, but if you’re traveling with older kids, definitely take a look.
Tips for Visiting Puerto Plata
Get Off the Ship Early
If you want the pool or lazy river, go first thing.
Prioritize the Lazy River
Don’t assume it won’t be crowded.

The café in port is worth it. Great coffee and friendly service.
Have a Backup Plan
If it’s crowded, consider heading back to the ship for a quieter experience.
